What a circle does to a photo
A round crop throws away the corners, and the corners are usually where the clutter lives. Cut them off and the eye goes straight to the middle of the frame, which is almost always the face you wanted people to look at.
It is about the size of a large pin badge. One face fills it properly. Two is a stretch. More than that and you are better off in a square.
The practical argument
No corners means nothing to catch, lift or peel. On a fridge door that gets opened forty times a day, or a locker, or a filing cabinet in a busy office, that is a real durability advantage over any square format.
It also happens to be the lowest starting price in the range, which is why it turns up so often as a party favor and as a save-the-date for couples watching the budget.
What it does badly
Anything with detail outside the centre. Group shots lose the people on the edges, landscapes lose their horizon, and a photo where someone is standing off to one side will lose half of them. Centre the subject before you order, or pick a square.
